The German program at Sassafras Primary is delivered by Frau Cornelia Tyrell, an experienced and innovative language educator. Frau Tyrell uses a highly effective immersion method, where German is spoken 90 percent of the time.
The emphasis in the classroom is on fun activities where students are encouraged to learn and gain confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing the German language. Students are encouraged to work cooperatively, helping one another with their learning in order to gain confidence and build on previous experience.
They learn basic vocabulary, personal sentences, cultural awareness and traditional celebrations, all the while consolidating their understanding of Australian customs and learning about German culture.
Other Enrichment Programs
The school recognises that children have different learning styles, talents and interests and provides additional enrichment programs which include: Swimming, Inter-School Sports, Sports Clinics, Junior School Council, Life Education, Health and Human Relations, Prep - 6 Camping program, a curriculum focused Excursion/Incursion Program, Special Activity Days and Buddy Programs.
Instrumental Music
Private lessons in piano and violin are available at Sassafras Primary. Piano students are encouraged to play at assembly and violin students can take part in end-of-term concerts. This give students the opportunity to gain performance experience and to give them a goal when practising.
