The Arts are an integral part of a holistic education for all children. At Sassafras Primary, children embark on a skills-based visual arts program from Prep to Grade 6. A range of artistic media and techniques are used to foster the development of creative skills and problem solving. Children are encouraged to use the skills they have learned and the variety of media available to them through the Arts program to develop creative solutions to set tasks.
By their very nature the Arts encourage cultural understanding. At Sassafras, children are encouraged to study a range of cultures which broadens their knowledge and understanding of the diversity of people and also enhances appreciation of their own culture.
The German program at Sassafras Primary is delivered by Frau Cornelia Tyrell, an experienced and innovative language educator. Frau Tyrell uses a highly effective immersion method, where German is spoken 90 percent of the time.
The emphasis in the classroom is on fun activities where students are encouraged to learn and gain confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing the German language. Activities include the use of technology, speaking into a microphone, a variety of language games, singing songs using body percussion and instruments, doing craft activities and completing written tasks individually, with partners, in teams and as a whole class.
Students are encouraged to work cooperatively, helping one
another with their learning in order to gain confidence and build on previous experience. They learn basic vocabulary, personal sentences, cultural awareness and traditional celebrations, all the while consolidating their understanding of Australian customs and learning about German culture.
Our school garden program is incorporated into our weekly timetable with all students involved in the care of the school's produce garden. Classes involve propagation, garden maintenance, outdoor craft and cooking. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their garden through a roster system for the care of the composting, worm farm and chickens. A strong emphasis is placed on connecting our students to the food they grow with all being involved in the entire process of garden to plate.
A philosophy of recycling, reusing and composting is maintained along with organic and permaculture principles that extends from our gardening through to garden craft and outdoor play. The produce garden is also used as a teaching tool throughout the wider school curriculum bringing the classroom outdoors.
Private lessons in piano and violin are available at Sassafras Primary. Piano students are encouraged to play at assembly and violin students can take part in end-of-term concerts. This give students the opportunity to gain performance experience and to give them a goal when practising.
Science at Sassafras is taken as part of the classroom curriculum as a topic in Integrated Studies as well as in the weekly specialist Science program for all students from Prep to 6.
The weekly program is linked to classroom topics, where appropriate, and is based on the Australian Curriculum.
The emphasis is on “discovery science” in which students explore ideas, materials and the environment; discuss, research and record observations. This term has begun with an exploration of materials in the Science Room – magnets, electricity, light/colour, construction materials, magnifiers and sound.
